Therese Hansen to Speak at HAI Fall Fundraiser
We are very pleased to announce Therese Hansen as our guest speaker at the HAI Fundraiser on Friday October 15th at the Museum of History and Industry.
Therese Hansen is the US Liaison to Africa Health Placements (AHP), South Africa. AHP is an on-the-ground organization founded in 2005 to address the impacts of health worker brain drain on sub-Saharan Africa. Therese worked for nearly two years in South Africa observing first-hand the effects of extreme disease burden pitted against an almost non-existent medical workforce in rural hospitals and clinics.
In the fall of 2008, Therese facilitated the expansion of AHP's reach to North America's medical community. In her current capacity, she persuades doctors to fill Africa's rural public health vacancies under long-term government contracts, and interfaces with American medical schools, clinics and associations to build stable linkages with Africa's hospitals.
Therese practiced law for almost two decades before leaving Seattle to work in Africa. She previously served as board member and president of King County Washington Women Lawyers. As a long-time member of the Seattle League of Women Voters, she held various board positions and chaired the League's healthcare and micro-lending committees. In 1995, she was the League's delegate to the Fourth UN Conference on Women in Beijing, China.
Therese has traveled extensively throughout Africa, frequently accompanied by her husband, Congressman Jim McDermott, with whom she shares a commitment to advancing global health and justice.
