USAID Administrator Visits Timor-Leste and HAI’s Work
A few weeks ago, USAID's Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for Asia, Frank Young, visited Timor-Leste and blogged about some projects in Maubissee in the central part of the country.
One of his stops was the health clinic operated by an organization called Cooperativa Café Timor (CCT), the "largest single-source producer of organically certified coffee in the world" (according to USAID). CCT is Timorese-owned, established in 2000 through an economic development project supported by the U.S. National Cooperative Business Association. CCT's goals are to improve the welfare of coffee growers, better market the product, and contribute to planning and policy related to Timor's largest export.
CCT revenues support clinics in rural parts of the country, providing health care to coffee workers and, thanks to additional funding from USAID, other villagers. We work with CCT to provide visual materials and videos that health workers can use to show patients and discuss topics such as family planning (child spacing) options and maternal and newborn care practices.
This blog post by Frank Young includes a photo of our country director, Dominique Freire, with a Ministry of Health midwife showing him the HAI-created materials that are used in the clinic.
We are excited about the progress of our work and partnerships in Timor!
