Dr. Mary Anne Mercer elected to Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Board
May 12, 2010
Seattle, WA -- May 12, 2010 -- Mary Anne Mercer, DrPH, has been elected to the Board of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. A part of the World Health Organization, the Partnership brings together hundreds of organizations and agencies to focus on improving maternal health and reducing infant and child mortality.
Dr. Mercer was elected to the Board by other member non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to represent the NGO constituency within the Partnership. Chaired by Dr. Julio Frenk, dean of the Harvard School of Public Health and former Minister of Health for Mexico, the Board makes governance and strategy decisions about how to make progress on the Partnership's priorities.
The Partnership's purpose is to advance progress towards achieving two of the eight Millenium Development Goals by 2015, specifically reducing child mortality (Goal 4) and reducing maternal mortality and expanding access to reproductive health services (Goal 5). Members of the Partnership contribute collectively to developing and promoting evidence-based, high-impact interventions; advocating for raising $30 billion to invest in maternal and child health programs; and tracking and measuring commitments and progress by donors and countries.
Dr. Mercer is Deputy Director of Health Alliance International, a center within the University of Washington's Department of Global Health. She is also a faculty member in that department as well as in the School of Public Health's Department of Health Services.
