Leadership and Management
Leadership and management are important components of a high quality and sustainable health system. Managers and high-level policy makers must have a good understanding of how the health system is operating, how to plan and budget, how to manage and motivate staff, and how to develop and provide vision for their part of the system.
We are committed to improving leadership and management capacity of the ministries of health in the countries where we work.
At the district and provincial level, our approach focuses on on-the-job management training and technical assistance, rather than off-site trainings that pull staff away from their offices. In Mozambique, our Provincial and District Management Support Teams provide in-service training and ongoing mentoring and coaching to their Ministry of Health counterparts, support their routine management activities and reinforcing the integration of new ideas and methodologies.
We prioritize development of trainings in the areas of: 1) data systems and analysis; 2) human resources; 3) finance and budgeting; 4) transport and maintenance; 5) pharmacy, medical supplies and materials.
We also look for ways to develop good leadership and management skills through our collaboration with the University of Washington, teaching and mentoring students and professionals who are the next generation of global health leaders.
