Reproductive and Child Health
We work with governments to improve the overall health and reduce mortality in mothers, children and newborn infants. We support the Ministry of Health to improve quality, access, and utilization of antenatal, delivery, postnatal/newborn services and HIV prevention, treatment, and care.
Partnering with the Ministry of Health in Timor-Leste, we work on family planning, creating safe places to give birth, and training midwives. With the Mozambican government, we provide technical assistance to improve children's health, integrate antenatal care services and prevent mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT). In Côte d’Ivoire, we provide psychosocial support to HIV-positive mothers and their children, and work with the Ministry of Health to increase PMTCT services across several regions.
As we face difficult challenges of scarce human resources and degraded health infrastructure, we have come to see that an integrated implementation strategy of multiple reproductive, maternal and child health interventions targeted at the most critical health problems is the most equitable and efficient way to improve the health of families and children in resource-poor settings.
In the countries where we work, far too many women associate motherhood with suffering, ill-health and even death. Strengthening maternal and child health services in Mozambique, Côte d’Ivoire and Timor-Leste is integral to our mission to strengthen health systems.
All women should have the right to access appropriate health care services that will enable safe pregnancy, childbirth and provide families with the best chance for healthy lives.
