Unembedded: A Photography Exhibit Illustrating the Impact of War on Health
In fall 2008 we helped to bring a touring photography exhibit to the University of Washington in Seattle to highlight the impact of the war on the health of Iraqis.
Entitled Unembedded: Four Independent Photojournalists on the War in Iraq, the exhibit featured 60 photos captured outside of the U.S. military's embedded journalist program. Photojournalists Ghaith Abdul-Ahad, Kael Alford, Thorne Anderson and Rita Leistner lived and worked in Iraq, providing an on-the-ground perspective unsupported and unbiased by military protection.
Two of the photojournalists, Thorne Anderson and Kael Alford, gave a talk and signed books at the UW's Kane Hall on October 12, 2008, sharing stories of their experiences witnessing the start of the war in 2003 and its immediate aftermath. From the image of a mother dying in front of her son in a hospital, to images of young men in the Mahdi militia arming themselves to fight, the photographers explored the complexities of the situation in Iraq.
You can view the talk online.
