Côte d’Ivoire
Health Alliance International worked in partnership with Côte d’Ivoire’s Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene (MSHP) from 1992 to 2021.
A french-speaking, West African nation with a population of nearly 25 million people, Côte d’Ivoire boasted the 12th largest economy in Africa in 2019, but the 7th lowest life expectancy in the world.
Despite recent economic growth and stability, Côte d’Ivoire’s not-too-distant history of civil and ethnic conflicts (1999, 2002-2007, 2010-2011) severely undermined the capacity and reach of the Ivorian health system, with enduring consequences. In Northern Côte d’Ivoire, in particular, this led to the destruction of health facilities and schools, disruption of services, and displacement of health workers.
MEET HA-CI
HAI is thrilled to introduce Health Alliance – Côte d’Ivoire, an Abidjan-based, independent local NGO with a board, leadership, and staff that reflects the communities they serve.

Starting in 2007, HAI began working to strengthen and integrate HIV/AIDS services into Côte d’Ivoire’s public sector health system.
Thanks to the effectiveness of HAI’s public sector partnership model, what started as supportive supervision at 10 public clinics in the Northern town of Bouaké grew into a comprehensive, clinical systems-strengthening approach at over 300 health facilities across 6 regions under Project LINKS.
Along with working to expand and integrate HIV/AIDS services within the public sector, HAI also partnered with the MSHP to test the efficacy of health services and identify ways to improve Côte d’Ivoire’s health delivery system. Projects included national health service assessments; service delivery intervention studies; and operations research workshops conducted in collaboration with the Ivorian National Public Health Institute.
As of October 2021, clinical HIV/AIDS services across the 6 regions formerly supported under Project LINKS continue to receive quality improvement and system strengthening support through a combination of MSHP and local, Ivorian NGO activities with ongoing USG/PEPFAR support.

Côte d’Ivoire-based programs below.
What makes HAI different is they help [us at] Bouaké Eveil integrate our work into health centers, highlighting the important role of community counselors in the continuum of care.
