Tropical Cyclone Seroja Response

Tropical Cyclone Seroja struck Timor-Leste and eastern Indonesia on April 4, 2021.  Health Alliance International is committed to engaging its decades-long relationship with Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Health to provide support .

Tropical Cyclone Seroja hit Eastern Indonesia and Timor-Leste on April 4th. Initial reports suggest that ~57,000 people are affected, including ~13,500 displaced Timorese. Reports from HAI staff and partners suggest significant damage to both private and public infrastructure, including damage to the national pharmacy supply warehouse, the national lab where COVID tests are analyzed, and the COVID PPE storage and distribution center.

In addition to flood-related fatalities, potential food shortages, and the threat of increased transmission of waterborne and vector transmitted (ie dengue) diseases, Timor-Leste’s capital city, Dili, has been under lockdown following a recent surge in COVID-19 cases and the nation’s first COVID-19 related death. Displacement in temporary shelters, as well as damage to health system infrastructure and supplies/equipment are likely to exacerbate the spread of COVID-19 and pose additional public health threats to anyone in need of medical attention or critical medicines.

As of April 6, HAI has already begun supporting immediate response efforts, including supplying evacuation centers with maternity kits for pregnant and breastfeeding women, and also contributing transportation support to Timor-Leste’s National Directorate of Civil Protection to conduct community and household needs assistance activities.

This is an evolving situation. HAI will be engaging our network of partners and supporters over the coming weeks and months, while working closely with Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Health to help realize their response priorities.  We will be updating this page with additional information as it is available.
